What is SEM?
SEM is generally what people are referring to when talking about Pay-per-click (PPC) or sponsored results in search engines. The way it all works is a business chooses several keywords that have to do twith their business. Then when a search engine user enters the keywords that they chose, the business' ad shows up in the areas marked in red in the screen shot below.
The order in which the ads appear is determined by a bidding system. The business that agrees to pay the highest amount each time their ad is clicked will appear in the highest spot, the business that agrees to pay the least shows up on the bottom. Every other ad falls between these two based on their cost per click bid.
The benefit to this SEM is that you can exert a lot more control over how your ad appears than you can with organic results. You can also do some prospect grooming before they get to your site through strategic wording and placement. Another great benefit of SEM is that your ad isn't just placed on Google's results page, you can also show up on YouTube and thousands of sites all across the web.
